40 years since Group B

Rallylegend 2026 celebrates 40 years since the end of the Group B era, one of the most spectacular and extreme periods in rally history. Numerous Group B cars will once again take centre stage in San Marino: some competing on the special stages, others on display in the Rallylegend Village. A unique opportunity to see up close the cars and technical solutions that defined an era.

Sunday 11 October: Memorial Bettega returns

One of the most eagerly awaited events of the 2026 edition is the return of the Memorial Bettega, the famous head-to-head challenge made famous by the Bologna Motor Show. On Sunday 11 October, on a course created from “The Legend” stage, the Memorial will bring together cars representing three great eras of rallying: Group A, Group B and WRC. Two cars, head-to-head competition and excitement right down to the final metre.

The protagonists: from historic cars to modern Rally1 machines

Rallylegend also offers the opportunity to see completely different generations of motorsport together at the same event. Among the protagonists announced for 2026 are M-Sport Ford WRT with Mārtiņš Sesks and the Ford Puma Rally1, Hyundai Motorsport with Dani Sordo and the Hyundai i20 N Rally1, and Lancia Corse HF with Nikolay Gryazin and the new Lancia Ypsilon Rally2 HF Integrale. Alongside the modern cars, legendary cars and drivers that have written the history of rallying will once again take centre stage, from Group B and Group A cars to the subsequent generations of WRC machines.

SAITO and Rallying: turbochargers for the cars of yesterday and today

SAITO has been part of this world for many years, supplying new original turbochargers for now-historic rally cars such as the Lancia Delta, Ford Escort and Sierra Cosworth, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Subaru Impreza, as well as more recent cars including the Hyundai i20, Ford Puma, Toyota GR Yaris, Škoda Fabia and Citroën C3. SAITO is the official Italian distributor for Mitsubishi, Garrett, BorgWarner (formerly KKK), IHI and Continental and, in addition to supplying new original turbochargers, carries out technical failure analysis, inspections and repairs. The connection between these major turbocharger manufacturers and the history of rallying goes back a long way: the Lancia Delta, Ford Sierra and Escort Cosworth raced and won with Garrett turbochargers; equally unforgettable is the partnership between the Audi Quattro and KKK, now BorgWarner, as well as those between the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Mitsubishi and between the Subaru Impreza and IHI. These technologies have evolved over time and still form the basis for the development of turbochargers used in today’s most modern and sophisticated competition cars.

Turbochargers for historic rally cars: when remanufacturing becomes restoration

When it comes to turbochargers for historic rally cars, remanufacturing can become a genuine form of technical restoration. Components that are now impossible to find, parts worn by decades of use and materials that offered different characteristics and levels of resistance compared with today’s materials require experience, knowledge of the application and careful assessment of every individual component. This is an activity in which SAITO applies the experience gained over more than thirty years in the turbocharger sector, with the aim of recovering and preserving, whenever technically possible, components that are part of the very history of these cars.

Technical insight: Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and the TD05H turbocharger

One of the most fascinating partnerships in rally history is that between the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Mitsubishi, a combination that achieved numerous victories in international competition. The famous Mitsubishi TD05H turbocharger played an important role in this history, an extremely sophisticated technical solution that, in its competition versions, featured an aluminised titanium turbine wheel and a magnesium compressor wheel. The use of such special materials reduced the turbocharger’s rotating mass and improved response, a crucial factor in rallying, where the immediate availability of torque and power when accelerating out of corners can make all the difference. This is just one example of how closely the development of the turbocharger has been linked to the evolution of the cars that have made rally history, and how major manufacturers have brought extremely sophisticated technical solutions to competition.

Rallylegend 2026: past, present and future of Rallying

From the legendary Group B cars to modern Rally1 machines, Rallylegend brings together more than forty years of technical and sporting evolution in San Marino. From 8 to 11 October 2026, four days to see extraordinary cars up close, meet the protagonists of rallying and relive some of the most exciting chapters in motorsport history. A story of drivers, engines, technology and passion, in which the turbocharger continues to play a leading role, yesterday as it does today.
