Turbo kit SD300: how to rejuvenate an “old” project still in the hearts of many!

Following the great experience gained in Garrett racing sector’s technical support in the years 1989-91 for Delta Official Abarth competition cars we decided to rejuvenate this project, still alive in the hearts of many.

Basically the Delta offers a sturdy and reliable mechanism and 4 × 4 traction guarantees a sporty and safe driving: the original turbocharger has an outdated aerodynamics unfit to compete in terms of performances with new generation products.

The thrust bearing of the Garrett T3 is of the open type at 280° and in case of increased pressure of supercharging this will be the Achilles’ heel due to the high axial stresses. In order to achieve an excellent result in terms of maximum power and, above all, low-speed response, SAITO has selected a turbo in the Mitsubishi range capable of guaranteeing considerable air flow rates with a reduced moment of inertia.

The mentioned Turbocharger belongs to the TD04HL family. The sizing of the impellers and of the turbine choking section was carried out using modern and sophisticated calculation systems adopted for the definition matching engine / turbo for the OE Market. The result was exceptional: the SD300 kit has in fact allowed to supercharge the robust Lancia engine from low revs reaching a power of 300 bhp at 1.5 bar of boost. Following our philosophy we will never intervene on the coreassy of the turbo in order not to lose, the original balance established by the producer (in our judgment this can not be restored with the normal balancing machines on the market). With this philosophy we have been able to achieve great results.

The SD300 comes along with all the necessary components for easy installation, nevertheless it will be necessary to reset the ECU. The selected turbo features a Niresist D5 turbine carter, a high carbon gray cast iron that is resistant to high exhaust gas temperatures without the risk of peeling or cracking. The turbo is supplied with a pre-set actuator at about 1.2 bar in direct contact with the compressor (Pierburg sensor must be bypassed).
SD300 uses an integrated pop off that generates a closed loop in the compressor, it is the best technical solution, the one that generates the least delay and the possibility during a fast disconnection not to empty the whole air circuit. The original pop off is valid but has a longer circuit and a more limited reaction capability. The pop off of the type with external discharge is conceptually wrong because it completely empties the circuit and moreover in the cases of engine with air mass reader the latter reads a quantity that is then evacuated during the release. People usually likes this because it generates the characteristic sound. For SD300 we recommend to remove the original pop-off and pipes completely, plugging the outlet holes from the pressure pipe and the intake pipe and connecting the original pop-off control tube to the integrated pop-up mounted on the compressor cover of the SD300.
