Alfa Romeo 75 has been produced by Alfa Romeo from 1985 until 1993 in the Arese factory. A car that really marked an era, being the last rear-wheel drive sports sedan produced by this automaker. Heir to the ’68 Giulietta, the Alfa 75 was presented to the press on May 11, 1985 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Alfa Romeo (hence the name). There was a strong need to replace the Giulietta, which was beginning to suffer from the weight of the years; This was a very difficult period for the Alfa Romeo, characterized by a lack of liquidity. Despite the premises and the almost obliged choice to keep the mechanics and part of the bodywork of the Giulietta, a modern-looking car was built, appreciated by the public and able to obtain excellent feedback on the market (about 375,257 units sold in 8 years).

The original turbine was a Garrett T3 with 0.48 A / R exhaust and 45-trim compressor; this relation between compressor and turbine was typical in those years, but certainly considered completely obsolete today: the compressor technology similar or smaller than the turbine has in fact been abandoned for a long time to make room for small but very fast turbines, coupled with compressors decidedly bigger and better than those of the past. This engine represents for me that I write the beginning of my career: in fact, in 1986, as a technician of the turbocharger’s division of Piaggio, I moved to Japan at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries along with an Alfa 1.8cc engine supplied by Alfa Romeo itself, whose engine development manager was the highly trained engineer. Lanati. The goal was to redefine supercharging by adopting a Mitsubishi turbocharger instead of the original Garrett. Shortly before the same engine had been used by the Alfa Romeo Avio for the development of an all-Italian turbocharger called Aravio, which unfortunately was never produced in series due to technical difficulties – Anyway Alfa Romeo came to produce a small quantity of engines equipped with Aravio turbochargers that were tested on taxis, but never came to mass production. The 1.8 turbo engine was one of the most beautiful engines produced by Alfa Romeo: with a few slight changes proposed by Alfa Corse, managed at time by Ing. Pianta with Ruggero Barbieri, it can easily reach 210 hp without problems.

Trivia.
– the “Centro Sperimentale Balocco”, better known as “Circuito di Balocco”, was the Alfa Romeo private test track located between Turin and Milan, it is there that the company could tests his own cars in complete privacy;
– For the car premiere, Alfa Romeo made a promotional short film, shot at Cinecittà and Spoleto, known as “Alfa 75 Superstar”. The car itself is the star of the short film: the Alfa 75 arrives at the studios for shooting the spot but lost among various sets of movies being processed, including Dracula, D’Artagnan, Mary Poppins and 007, interacting with the stars of the various movies.
